In this thread i want you to recomend good WW2 films, so ill start

Talvisota (The Winter War)

This movie is about the finnish winter war. Dont expect hollywood here, but its just plain awesome.

Das Boot

Das Boot is about a german sybmarine crew during 1942. If you watch the dubbed (to english) version, i will be VERY angry at you.

Someone seen Valkyrie btw? If yes, any good? Think im going to watch it this friday.

Yes I watched Valkyrie, had potential, but because it was done in English it loses any authenticity. Should have been in german with sub-titles

Holy Scheiße Heimdal! That's an awesome cover of Talvisota you found. Very Happy

As a friend of German made ww2 movies I've to recommend...

STALINGRAD (1993, some parts filmed in Finland btw Very Happy )

Awesome movie.
Shows you the German side of view and that they were humans too.

DER UNTERGANG, DOWNFALL (2004)

Fantastic movie and good actors!
Tells the story of those in the Führer-Bunker during the last days of the Dritte Reich.

Tuntematon Sotilas, The Unknown Soldier (1955)

Even if this one's old, it is a legend. At least in Finland. Smile
Even if you're a foreigner and you might loose some of the glamour because of it, this truly is a masterpiece. It shows the life of regular soldiers during the Continuation war (1941-1944). It comes from the TV every independence day here Smile
There's also a colour film made in the 80's but I prefer this one. (Both are based on the book)

I can't recommend other Finnish war movies except Talvisota (Winter war), but I believe that Wohlfänger can. cool

Der Untergang (Downfall) is brilliant.

I would also NOT recommend Stalingrad. What an awful film. In fact, I'd prefer not to talk about it.

Band of brothers is good (Although its not a film) and The longest day is a classic.

I need to watch Das boot to be honest, heard its one of the best WW2 movies ever. Im also going through a U-Boat phase...

BoB is a good serie, but it is so hollywood stuff, like "Germans are evil motherfuckers" and other shit. Yeah some of its is true, but ppl are so fucking wrong when they say "Germans were bad", cause its a lie. not every german soldier or citizen was a nazi or a jew killer. "Hitler and Nazis were bad" would be correct. Neutral

flagsmile = bad

regulation salute =normal

I've noticed the same. Don't mind, people just ignorant.

I like all war movies except the bad ones ( lol ).

Der Untergang, Unknown Soldier (1980, coloured one), Stalingrad and the finnish winterwar movie Tali-Ihantala would top 4 I guess.

Disagree. It was the reason why I gave it 10/10 on imdb, it is not like that. If you have seen all the epiosde you see a scene where a german soldier get shot, and the guy who shoots him get nightmares about it, because he saw the fear in the boys eyes. In one of the final episodes you will see a interview in the start where the americans says that when the germans where defeated, they where defeatet like men as he said.
Quote :
Major Winters accepts the surrender of a German Colonel, who offers him an ornate Luger pistol. In the scene, Winters tells him to keep his sidearm, but in the Bonus Features DVD, the real Winters recalls the incident and shows the pistol (a Walther PP) he accepted. In Ambrose's book of the same title, he describes how when Winters examined the firearm, he found it had never been fired, and he hasn't fired it since

And i want to know where you get all this "all germans are potrayed bad in this movie" from.

Have to agree with Heimdal. The scene where Winters shoots the German kid, is very well done. I dont think they are portrayed as Evil, the only way in which they might be is on the second to last episode, when they liberate the death camp. Thats pretty harrowing...

I recommend Cross of Iron, I own this one and have watched it twice

I own Stalingrad, It is a hard movie to watch, it is neither good nor bad, there are some very true parts in this film that are just sad to think really occurred. It's definetly worth watching once.

Hilters SS, is a decent movie, Ive watched it a couple times

BoB is my fav, and SPR- both are great and I think portray things fairly accuratley.

My Dad is German and lived in Germany during the war, I told him when SPR was in the theatres that it was a must see. He said it was pointless to watch because he already knew how the movie ends, the Germans lose Wink

About the "all Germans are bad" well I think it's normal that something like that might show (even if in Brothers in arms it is rare) because that was what the allied soldiers thought, I don't like politically right movies...

I think its worth mentioning that there were some awful war crimes commited against german's during WW2, so it's not just the Aliies who suffered.

Tuntematon sotilas was GREAT. I had to see it with swedish subtitles tho, so it made it harder to focus on the actual film:(, but damn it was good. Framom främsta linjen was OK

I know this forum isn't so active anymore, but i need to recomend this film to you

Voskhozhdeniye (or The Ascent if you want) is not a typical war movie with explotions and action-scenes, but a slow-paced psychological war movie that focuses on peoples minds rather than shooting and action. The film is beutifuly photographed (it's black and white) and really catches the coldness and emptyness of winter-russia in war time. The movie is slow, very slow, but it's mezmerising and I wasn't bored for a second. The dialogue in the interogation-scenes is awfully good. If you are a fan of realistic war movies, this is a must watch. Too bad this film is so unknown, because it really deserve some attention.

And I also need to reccomend a french ww2-movie wich is just as slow-paced and good as the one above: Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut (or the less scary english title A Man Escaped)

A man is the french ressistance is captured and imprisoned. This movie showed how he escaped..
This movie reminds me so much of The Ascent, so if you enjoyed The Ascent, this is a mandatory movie you will have to watch.

And to the The Forgotten Soldier discussion above: I read it in the easter at our cabin after you recomended it, and it's maybe the best book I have ever read (not that i read so much). It's fantastic how he remeber little details that almost bring you to the russian front. Once i started reading it I couldn't stop. A must-read for everyone that haven't.

Heimdal out salute
